About Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy

There are many strange ideas prevalent about hypnosis.  Most are engendered by stage hypnotism and mentalists. What you see on stage are excellent hypnotic subjects who are predominantly extroverts that relish the chance to perform on stage. They are deeply hypnotized but have way more personal control than appears. A large part of the stage hypnotists craft is the production of the illusion that they have the subject completely under their control. Probably the notion that not everyone can be hypnotized comes from the stage hypnotists process of finding only the most eager and practiced at going into a hypnotic trance at will and eliminating those that would require an extended process. Because of time constraints and entertainment values, these are practical considerations for the craft. Anyone who truly wants to be hypnotized will be hypnotized and likewise it is very hard if not impossible to hypnotize someone against their will. However, we can be hypnotized relatively easy without realizing that we are being put in trance and indeed this happens to every one of us on a daily basis. Advertising is a multi billion dollar business that effectively depends on this. When you drive somewhere and suddenly realize that you are at your destination but have been lost in thought and driving on automatic, you have been in a trance. When you become totally engrossed in a program on television or a film you are in a trance state – advertisers depend on this to drop their message into your subconscious mind while you are well entranced and receptive. A daydream is a trance state. Just before you fall asleep and just after you awake you are in a hypnotic trance state. Meditation is another version of a self induced trance state. These are all the same or similar states, identifiable by the pattern of brain cycles but the difference is in how one directs or allows others to direct the trance. Importantly, one is not unconscious or asleep in the normal way when in a hypnotic trance- your conscious mind remains present and is often called on to participate in the work that the subconscious mind is engaged in.

My approach: To start I do a  consultation with you about your intentions, what you would like to achieve and why. I then do a very relaxing induction and a consultation script that helps me get a sense of how to work with you in the hypnotic trance and familiarizes you with the state. It is a very tonic and invigorating  experience generally. I am seated beside the client who rests comfortably in a reclining chair.

The way changes happen varies greatly from client to client, depending on the specific processes and how the specific client reacts.  Hypnotherapy is not a recipe – it is tailored to your individual needs, personality, desire and history. I work with you to achieve your ends.

Some aspects of hypnotherapy work can be highly emotionally charged as repressed emotional energies and blocks are opened and released. This is a normal part of some important processes, typically we would move back and forth between a pre-established “safe” place or state at a full remove from the volatile emotional state until it loses it’s emotional impact and can be experienced more objectively. The purpose of releasing trapped or armored emotional states is to reconnect and facilitate integration of the vital flowing dynamism between soul, mind and body. Amazingly it is often very small, even inconsequential emotional events and childhood misconceptions that can lead us to contrive effective if ultimately inappropriate responses to certain experiences or imaginings as a child. Often it is enough just to bring the adult consciousness to bear on the experience for a full release to happen.
